Metallicity Dependent Wolf-Rayet Winds
Observational and theoretical evidence in support of metallicity dependent winds for Wolf-Rayet stars is considered. Well known differences in Wolf-Rayet subtype distributions in the Milky Way, LMC and SMC may be attributed to the sensitivity of subtypes to wind density. Implications for Wolf-Rayet stars at low metallicity include a hardening of ionizing flux distributions, an increased WR popu...
متن کاملSearching for hidden Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galactic Plane – 15 new Wolf-Rayet stars
We report the discovery of fifteen previously unknown Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars found as part of an infrared broad-band study of candidate WR stars in the Galaxy. We have derived an empirically-based selection algorithm which has selected ∼5000 WR candidate stars located within the Galactic Plane drawn from the GLIMPSE (midinfrared) and 2MASS (near-infrared) catalogues. Spectroscopic follow-up of 1...
متن کاملUv Excess Galaxies: Wolf-rayet Galaxies
We discuss V and R band photometry for 67% of the Sullivan et al. (2000) SA57 ultraviolet-selected galaxy sample. In a sample of 176 UV-selected galaxies, Sullivan et al. (2000) find that 24% have (UV-B) colors too blue for consistency with starburst spectral synthesis models. We propose that these extreme blue, UV excess galaxies are Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies, starburst galaxies with strong UV ...
متن کاملGamma-ray emission from Wolf-Rayet binaries
In the colliding wind region of early-type binaries, electrons can be accelerated up to relativistic energies displaying power-law spectra, as demonstrated by the detection of non-thermal radio emission from several WR+OB systems. The particle acceleration region, located between the stars, is exposed to strong photon fields in such a way that inverse Compton cooling of the electrons could resu...
متن کاملMassive Star Populations in Wolf-Rayet Galaxies
We analyze longslit spectral observations of fourteen Wolf-Rayet galaxies from the sample of Schaerer, Contini & Pindao (1999). All 14 galaxies show broad Wolf-Rayet emission in the blue region of the spectrum, consisting of a blend of NIIIλ4640, CIIIλ4650, CIVλ4658, and HeIIλ4686 emission lines, which is a spectral characteristic of WN stars. Broad CIVλ5808 emission, termed the red bump, is de...
